A punching bag is a strong bag that has been designed to be continuously punched. It is majorly used for stress relief or for physical exercise. Punching bag is meant to improve three specific areas which are physical strength, punching technique, and aerobic fitness. This device has been in use for a very long time since the time of martial arts and sword play. Punching bags are usually filled with sand, rags, grains or other materials. The bag is hung from a high place, mostly the ceiling; it can also be attached to a stand.

Uses of Punching Bags

The punching bag has been designed to allow for maximum abuse without the bag breaking. This is because it can absorb the great impact of the punches and in addition to this; it cannot also harm the user. Punching bags are of different types and names based on their use, mounting method, and size. All punching bags are usually covered with some synthetic material or leather. There is the speed bag which is a small air filled bag that is anchored on top of a rebound platform that is parallel to the ground. There are also the swerve balls which are close to the speed bags but with different size and material. The swerve balls help the boxer to enhance his punching, dodging, and swerving ability and at the same time help him to know how to coordinate his movement.

Other Types of Punching Bags

The double end bags on the other hand are round bags and very light. They are often fastened to the ceiling or the floor with an elastic material. These types of bags are meant to help boxers practice accuracy and mobility on a target that is moving. There is the maize bag which is used for boxing training. Maize bags are meant to help improve the boxer’s head motion and the ability to avoid the punch of an opponent.
