International Boxing Federation (IBF)
The full meaning of IBF is International Boxing Federation and it is one of the four main bodies that are acknowledged by IBHOF to sanction the activities of world championship boxing sessions. The other bodies are WBO, WBA, and WBC. The International Boxing Federation is an offshoot of United States Boxing Association (USBA) which is a regional championships organization. Other regional organizations that are like IBF are NABA, NABF, and NABC.
The Early Days of IBF
The first world champion from IBF was Marvin Camel who was a former WBC world Cruiserweight champion. The IBF was not very popular during the first year of the body’s existence but by the year 1984, the body came to light when they recognized some other world champions from other organizations as their own (IBF) champions. World championship title holders that are acknowledged by IBF include Aaron Pryor, Donald Curry, Larry Holmes, and Marvin Hagler. With this action of IBF, the body was recognized as the third sanctioning body as well as a legitimate body. From this time, the IBF has been involved in sanctioning many essential fights and some world champions.
Specific Activities of IBF
The new IBF Heavyweight champion is Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko. The IBF has been involved in many activities that have given them the third place among all the governing bodies in the boxing profession. In 1983, the highly regarded world heavyweight champion, Larry Holmes, showed his interest in contesting for the fight of IBF has given the organization a higher measure of recognition and credibility in the world of boxing. In 2010, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) started ranking female boxers. The body crowned its first female champion in November of 2010.
